The exhaust is critical to your vehicle’s emissions and your safety, so don’t ignore the following six signs. Bring your vehicle into our shop as soon as possible.

Engine Noise

You know how your automobile should sound, and if it is suddenly louder than normal, you might have trouble with your muffler or exhaust manifold gasket. If your car, truck, or SUV’s engine is louder-than-normal, hissing, or tapping, that’s a sign something is wrong with the exhaust system.

Power/Acceleration Trouble

If you have an exhaust leak, you may notice that your vehicle loses power when you try to accelerate from a dead stop or when you try to pick up speed. You may also feel power losses while you’re driving. This can be caused by exhaust system leaks, spark plug problems, or clogged air or fuel filters.

Low Mileage

If your vehicle is indeed struggling to pick up and maintain speed, it’s working harder, which reduces fuel efficiency. Sometimes, the reduced gas mileage is so subtle that you might not notice it; other times, it might be obvious. Either way, it’s cheaper to fix your exhaust system than waste money on gas.

Engine Burning Smell

Your exhaust manifold is one of the most important parts in your vehicle’s exhaust system and if the manifold gasket begins to leak, you might notice a hot smell coming from your automobile engine. This is because the exhaust manifold gasket is releasing exhaust gases onto parts and overheating them.

Visible Exhaust Pipe Damage

Your exhaust pipe or pipes can be easily damaged if you hit a pothole or go over a bump too fast. Damage includes unseating the pipe(s) so it is hanging down, holes in the pipe(s), or bending or breaking the pipe(s). Replace this crucial part(s) immediately if there is visible damage to it.

Gas Smell

Your exhaust system draws harmful fumes away from your vehicle and if you smell gasoline inside your car, the system is failing. This is dangerous, even deadly, so don’t just roll down your windows and ignore the problem. Carbon monoxide can leak into your car and poison you.
